The Mayor of St.Catharines saying that he has met with the owners of the Niagara IceDogs.
Walter Sendzik calling today's meeting productive and informative.
Sendzik met with Bill and Denise Burke about their one million dollar donation to the Meridian Centre.
He told CKTB this week, he would give them the same deal they initially agreed to regarding naming IceDogs Way.
Sendzik refused to confirm whether the recent departure of the city's solicitor had anything to do with the botched deal.
He says safeguards are being put in place to make sure this never happens again.
At issue was the wording of the 2014 deal, which put the naming rights in perpetuity.
However, when it came time to sign the deal naming rights were capped at 20 years.
The Burke's said they would cancel the donation because of a number of issues with the city.
Here is the Mayor's latest statement:
As per the direction of City Council, I had a productive and informative meeting today with the owners of the Niagara IceDogs. This meeting was an opportunity for the owners to personally express their concerns about the process that led to last week's statement. I am committed to working together to ensure a positive working relationship between the City and the Niagara IceDogs moving forward.
I also reinforced the City's appreciation for the Niagara IceDogs in our community. I thanked Bill and Denise Burke for investing in St. Catharines and for their continued support of community events and local businesses. The IceDogs are important to the City and a great source of pride in the community.
