The golden handshake given to former Niagara Police Chief Jeff McGuire highlighting discussion at the region's corporate services committee meeting yesterday.
Members of the committee discussing the controversial $870,000 early retirement package given to the Chief by the Police Services Board.
Niagara Falls regional councillors Selena Volpatti and Bart Maves questioning a decision by the last police board to extend McGuires contract for three years.
Volpatti also bringing up McGuire's past history as a Toronto cop and his involvement in the forces handling of the 2010 G20 protests
Volpatti says "One of the things, that was very clear to anyone living in Ontario at the time, that the fiasco of the G20 that occured in 2010, was just resolved in the courts in 2016."
Her question was interrupted by Thorold Councillor Henry D'Angela who told committee chair Tony Quirk "If we are going to start criticizing individuals and their actions, you may want to think about how you proceed as chair because you may be putting us at risk of liability."
Quirk responding there was nothing in Volpatti's question that isn't on public record.
Bart Maves noting McGuire's contract was extended for three years by the previous police board and he asked "would the region's HR staff have known about the chief's role in the G20 incidents?"
The pushback over McGuire's package comes after the former chief said he was willing to fulfill his contract for another three years, but decided to retire after the board offered him a package that was too good to refuse.
