Farmers are breathing a sigh of relief after the Mexican government announced it will allow farm labourers to leave to work in Canada after receiving assurances from Ottawa more would be done to protect migrant workers from COVID-19.
This comes hours after Norfolk County Mayor Kristal Chopp issued a release saying a migrant farm worker in Haldimand Norfolk died in intensive care over the weekend after being infected with COVID 19.
The worker was one of nearly 200 labourers who tested positive for the virus at the Scottlyn Group farm in Vittoria.
A St. Catharines greenhouse was also the scene of a recent outbreak of the coranavirus.
The Mexican government had said until there were improvements it would stop allowing workers to leave for Canada leading to fears of farm labour shortages.
But late last night the Mexican government issued a release saying Canada has agreed to increased inspections and also will help workers identify and report any unsafe working conditions.
