Officials in Niagara-on-the-Lake reporting a spill.
Town officials saying a 3 kilometre spill has occured in the Harrison 1 Drain that runs along Concession 3 Road.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) is involved as well as Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.
The water has been degraded below acceptable ministry levels however, the potential source of contamination has been identified and Town staff has mobilized an environmental consulting company to assess and monitor the water and soil quality and to produce documentation.
“At this point there is no risk to public safety and no impact to the Town’s water supply system”, stated Sheldon Randall, Director of Operations. “We are confident that the spill has been contained and cleanup has commenced.”
"Town staff are working diligently to rectify this incident as quickly and effectively as possible," noted Lord Mayor Pat Darte. "Filtration methods have been put in place and the Town’s drain maintenance contractor is assisting with the cleanup."
