A study from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children has found that on average, one child a year dies across Canada after being trapped in a hot car.
The researchers examined six cases between 2013 and 2018, however, another that happened in British Columbia in May was too recent to be included in the data.
The study found that in most of the cases, the youngster died after a parent or caregiver forgot they were in the backseat.
Doctor Joelene Huber, who co-authored the study, says these sorts of accidents can happen to anyone.
But she says parents can adopt new habits as a form of prevention.
For instance, she says a child should never be left unattended in a vehicle -- not even for a moment while a parent or guardian runs a quick errand.
She says it's all too easy for people to get distracted and forget that a little one is still in the car.
