Concerning stats today from the Ontario Association of Food Banks.
The group says that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of seniors who are accessing food banks.
The "Hunger Report" for 2018 shows a 10% increase for seniors looking for a helping hand.
At Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold, CEO Betty Lou Souter says the jump is clear, "Some months we are up at about 15% with new seniors."
Souter says for many seniors this is unchartted waters, "they haven't had to use it before and it's a whole new thing for them." She adds, "They always promise that soon as they are back on their feet or they have a bit more that they will be able to give us a couple cans of food."
Overall, more than 500,000 people turned to food banks last year in Ontario.
Coming up is the 14th Annual Great Holiday Food Drive.
It takes place December 14th at Market Square from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Donations of food, clothing, and cash will be collected in support of Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold.
