We know solving the issue of homelessness is a complex one, and a discussion at Niagara Falls council proved that to be true.
Several community members joined in on a lengthy discussion regarding people living in motels in Niagara Falls.
A report to council recommended licensing requirements to operate motel rooms as residences, including mandatory private bathrooms, fridges, and food preparation areas.
Ultimately council decided that if a motel wants to provide housing or 'single room occupancy' they must go before the Committee of Adjustment and all residents or businesses in the area would be notified of the motel's intention.
If there are objections, the motel can then be turned down.
Motel owners spoke during the discussion, saying 90% of people living out of motels are great tenants, but the remaining 10% cause problems they have no way of addressing.
Council passed a motion asking the Ontario government to review the Landlord and Tenant Act to give landlords and police more power to address those issues.
City Councillor Wayne Campbell tells CKTB it was a terrible mistake on council's part not to make it easier for motels to offer housing options.
