In the wake of a fatal fire in Oshawa yesterday, the Niagara Falls Fire Department wants to remind the public to make sure that they have working smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside all sleeping areas.
Fire Chief Jim Boutilier says fire moves so fast that you may have less than 60 seconds to safely escape a fire, so early warning is crucial to survival.
He says it is up to you to make sure these types of tragedies do not happen in Niagara.
Four people died in the Oshawa blaze including two children.
Investigators will be looking at smoke detectors and whether the house, which had been divided into apartments, was up to code.
