Niagara College is welcoming its first Commercial Cannabis Production class.
Local dignitaries were on hand as the college officially launched the one of a kind program at the Niagara-On-The-Lake campus yesterday.
24 students selected from among 300 applicants will be getting hands on experience with cannabis production in a fully secure teaching lab.
Graduates will go on to work as growers, operation managers, and quality control representatives.
"The success of our economy locally, provincially and beyond depends on our ability to develop a highly skilled workforce to drive the growth of existing and emerging industries – and that’s where colleges play a crucial role," Niagara College president Dan Patterson say via a release. "The emerging Cannabis sector is a perfect example of that and our program – Canada’s first graduate credential in Cannabis production – shows how Niagara College anticipates and responds to needs and trends in industry. We're pleased today to celebrate a pioneering moment for Niagara College, and for postsecondary education in Canada."
The college has also established relationships with several Licensed Producers including Canopy Growth Corp.
