The Niagara Falls Humane Society and Welland and District Humane Society have amalgamated to create the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society.
John Greer, Executive Director of the Welland and District Humane Society, who will be the Executive Director of the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society, says they felt they could bring better and quicker service if they joined forces.
Greer says it's been in the making for about a year, and together they're going to save on resources and management, which means they can put more money into the animals.
Both boards will join to create the new board, which consists of 12 members.
Jeff Riley will serve as chair of the board.
The remaining facilities will stay open, they're just rebranding.
He adds that all current employees will keep their jobs.
Over the years, Greer says care at humane societies has improved.
He's proud that they're able to offer in-house veterinary care and low cost clinics.
Greer says one thing they're working on is with the OSPCA on an animal transfer program.
He says they've been bringing dogs in from as far away Nunavut.
They bring these animals in because there is a shortage of dogs at Niagara's shelters, and we have the resources other facilities don't so we can take care of them.
With the community partners, Greer says they're able to showcase the animals that are adoptable all over the region.
The cat adoption centre at the Seaway Mall adopts out 85-100 cats a month, says Greer.
The new organization held their first joint fundraising Gala on Saturday night.
Greer says the amalgamation will still take another 6-8 weeks to become official.
