Niagara Falls Council will be putting forward $125,000 to help the Hockey Canada Foundation leave a legacy in the city.
Some of hockey's biggest stars will be in The Falls on June 15th and 16th for the 2020 Hockey Canada Gala and Golf event at the Scotiabank Convention Centre.
Professional Hockey Players Association Executive Director Larry Landon appeared before council last night to ask for initial funding.
"We get 50 percent of the net proceeds that are derived from the event. However, because we're not an NHL city, we've negotiated with Hockey Canada that we get to keep 100 percent of any funds raised from municipal, regional, provincial government. So that will all 100 percent be staying in this community."
Landon explained the money will be used for a year-round para-hockey ice pad at Heartland Forest and improvements at the Chippawa Arena.
He also says funds will be used to buy all new equipment for 45 - 60 Niagara children in need and enrol them in a six week on-ice training course called First Shift.
During the Gala the Canadian Juniors will be receiving their championship rings.
The event will be broadcast on TSN.
