A consultant's report, recommending Niagara go from 12 municipalities to four single tier cities, is now available to the public to read.
The report by Nick Tibollo, the principal researcher at North Milestone, was done in response to the provincial government's current review of two tier municipalites in Ontario.
Spearheaded by Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati and local tourism owners, Tibollo says he looked at the Berkely Report done in 2000 which recommended a three to four city model.
He then looked into newspaper reports and had consultations with local politicians and senior level bureaucrats.
In the end, Tibollo concluded the best way to trim local government in Niagara, is to go to a four city model which would slash the number of politicians from 126 to 30.
Mayor Diodati explains the four city model would see the region's three biggest cities, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Welland absorb surrounding areas, with the western part of the region merging to make up the fourth city.
The move would eliminate the need for regional government.
