Niagara Falls officials are trying to give residents and visitors some peace of mind by encouraging businesses to join a new 'Safe To Play' initiative.
Mayor Jim Diodati says stickers will be appearing in store windows to show which organizations are taking part.
"We've done research and seen what they're doing in Disney, Universal, Las Vegas and around the world and we've done everything including bringing in UV lights, hydrogen peroxide misting, and all sorts of anti-microbial approaches and applications to make sure we've done everything we can do to be safe."
The safetoplay.ca website outlines several measures participating groups will be adhering to including regular sanitization procedures, physical barriers to promote distancing, and reducing the allowable number of guests.
Diodati says this will be 'the year of the patio' and believes people will rush to outdoor recreational spaces.
"I can tell you there are just some businesses that are still waiting for some more sanitizing equipment to arrive on site, but the majority of the attractions will be open this weekend. I can tell you a majority of the patios will be open this weekend."
When asked if he felt like tourist will 'behave', Diodati said the vast majority of people are following the rules. He says if they don't follow protocols, they won't be allowed into businesses.
"We're asking people to exercise common sense but we do have strict protocols in place as well."
