The mayor of Niagara Falls is confirming he has classical Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
In an open letter to the community, Mayor Jim Diodati thanks the public for their support thus far. The mayor was admitted to hospital on Sunday, July 8th and began fighting pneumonia.
He writes, "further testing confirmed Friday that I have Classical Hodgkin's Lymphoma - which is a treatable illness with almost a 100% cure rate."
The Canadian Cancer Society describes Hodgkin's Lymphona as a cancer starting in the white blood cells of the lymphatic system.
"I have significantly improved since I was first admitted to the hospital and am growing stronger every day. I am very optimistic about my treatment and recovery plan, and have been receiving excellent care through the Niagara Health System," Diodati says. "I'm eager to return to my duties as mayor of the city I love, and I fully intend to run for re-election this fall. I really appreciate all the prayers and well wishes, but won't be receiving visitors as I focus on a full recovery."
