The Niagara Falls New York Water Board is promising to spend more than $27 million to deal with ongoing wastewater discharges into the Niagara River.
Earlier this month Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates wrote an open letter to the Environment Minister, saying "The continued damaging of our River is nothing short of an environmental catastrophe."
The Water Board has now responded, saying they will be spending $20 million dollars to upgrade wastewater infrastructure in the first phase of improvements, and eventually plan to spend more than $27 million on upgrades to improve water quality.
In a release, officials for the board state, "The Water Board wishes to reassure MPP Gates and our Canadian neighbors that it remains wholly committed to proper wastewater treatment and the distribution of the highest-quality drinking water consistent with public health laws and regulations, as well as the public enjoyment of natural resources, the protection of fish and wildlife, the economic development of the City of Niagara Falls and the general wellbeing of the surrounding area."
