Niagara Falls has joined St. Catharines, Fort Erie and Port Colborne to become the latest Niagara municipality to say yes to hosting private retail pot shops.
Councillors also voting last night to send a resolution to the province asking that it give municipalities more controls over the location of the stores and the number that will be allowed to operate.
Councillor Vince Kerrio was the only member of council to vote against opting in at this time, "we don't need to opt in, this is not something where we need to be a leader, let's watch what happens in the other municipalities and then when we see that it's right for us, we opt in."
Councillors also want to see some amendments made to the Region's anti-smoking bylaw to include cannabis to areas where tobacco products can be smoked or consumed.
One would-be store owner in Niagara is among the first 25 candidates who will be allowed to apply for legal retail pot license.
The successful company identified as the Niagara Herbalist has until January 25th to submit a formal application.
