The former Niagara Transit building on Bridge Street in Niagara Falls cost a lot more to knock down that originally anticipated.
The contract was awarded at a cost of $165,000, that price tag has now swelled to $650,000 due to unexpected environmental issues discovered during demolition.
An overbudget cost of $485,000 dollars.
During destruction it was discovered the land surrounding the building was contaminated with hyrdocarbons.
An environmental team was brought it to deal with it and remedial action was more intensive than original expected.
Also two concrete walls were discovered underneath the building and removal of those had not been budgeted for in the original tender.
The old transit building was demolished to make way for parking to accomodate potential future year round GO train service to Niagara Falls.
