The president of Niagara Health is urging Niagara Regional Council to extend the mandatory face covering by-law.

Lynn Guerriero says "...the wearing of masks is critical to keep the transmission of COVID-19 down in the community."

She adds hospitals do not want to be in position where they need to ramp down services or reduce visitor access again.

Niagara Regional Council will be considering a motion at tonight's meeting to extend the temporary by-law past the original October 1st deadline.

The by-law requires face coverings in enclosed public spaces where physical distancing is not possible.

Exceptions are in place for children under the age of five and people who cannot wear a mask due to a medical condition or disability.
