Niagara Health urging women to get screened for cervical cancer.
October 16th to the 20th is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week and local officials are encouraging all women aged 21 and older to get screened for cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable with the HPV vaccine, regular screening and appropriate and timely follow-up of abnormal results.
Since the 1980s, the cervical cancer death rate in Ontario has gone down because more women have been screened with Pap tests.
It is estimated that in 2017, about 710 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 150 women will die from the disease.
