Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates is asking the province to investigate the discharge that was released into the lower Niagara River from a Niagara Falls New York waste water plant this past weekend.
Gates firing off a letter to new Environment Minister Chris Ballard asking him to ensure no damage was done to the Niagara River and to make sure such an incident never happens again.
On Saturday afternoon, a smelly wastewater discharge turned the water at the base of Niagara Falls black alarming tourists, locals and business operators.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo launched an investigation earlier this week saying the plant may have violated state water quality standards.
The dark water enveloped the dock the Maid of the Mist tour boats on the American side of the falls.
The Buffalo News reporting that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says while the treatment plant had permits to discharge wastewater it did not have permission to turn the water black and suspects the plant may have committed other violations.
Violations carry a hefty fine of $37,500 U-S.
