The NDP MPP for Niagara Falls, asking the Ford government to do something about the violence and overcrowding at jails in the province.
Wayne Gates says it's about the health and safety of our corrections officers.
He adds consistent underfunding of our corrections system is putting them in danger.
Gates telling the legislature “In Niagara we have a jail that is busting at the seams on the weekends. There’s 35 of inmates in a dorm meant for 28 and sometimes they’re being held in rooms without washrooms.”
The MPP adds "These people act out. Violence happens and guards get hurt. Recently a front-line officer was attacked with a broom handle – he needed 8 staples in his head to close the wound.”
