A high profile Niagara ophthalmologist is appealing after the College of Physicians and Surgeons, ordered his medical license be revoked.
Last month the College revoked his license after ruling Doctor Andrew Taylor, owner of Lasik Provision, " had engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable, or unprofessional conduct involving billing for medical procedures that were not performed and instructing members of his staff to create, alter, or otherwise manipulate medical records related to such procedures."
On its website the College writes "Dr. Taylor first performed the Zyoptix procedure at the clinic in the summer of 2002. From the summer of 2002 until May 2003 (the “Material Time”), over 120 patients were billed for the Zyoptix procedure when in fact they had received the less expensive Planoscan procedure. The clinic issued refund cheques to 133 patients in 2003."
Doctor Taylor, who resigned as head of Ophthalmology with the Niagara Health System last August when the college began its investigation, says in an email to Post Media, he is obviously disappointed by the college’s decision.
He says he has apologized for the issue that occurred under the management of a different corporation, Lasik MD that took place 15 years ago, and has worked to rectify it.
Taylor notes that he believes he should be allowed to continue practising and that the decision by the CPSO is harsh and overly punitive.
The College says Taylor will be allowed to continue practising until his appeal is heard.
