The Niagara Regional Police will have a new tool to handle dangerous situations.
The Police Service Board has voted to spend $300,000 to buy an armoured rescue vehicle from Terradyne Armoured Vehicles Inc.
Niagara Regional Police Chief Bryan MacCulloch says the vehicle is an important tool for their tactical unit, "Think of it as nothing more than it's a mobile piece of safety equipmet for our officer to allow them to do thier job much more safely, to provide that level of safety for them in high risk situations, but also to provide that level of safety for members of the community."
The funding was already built into the budget that was approved by regional council. Chief Bryan MacCulloch says the pricetag can also be a little misleading, "We certainly recognize that $300,000 is a lot of money, but the lifespan of the vehicle is 20 years. So, when you break it down over the course of 20 years were talking $15,000 a year."
Up until now the NRPS had been borrowing a vehicle from Hamilton or Halton police when the situation called for one.
