Niagara's Public Works Committee will be discussing installing barriers at the Burgoyne Bridge during their next meeting.
Since October, six deaths have occurred at the bridge in St. Catharines, leading council to earmark 4 million dollars for safety measures along the span.
Niagara's Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mustafa Hirji warns if the rate of death remains consistent, it would be the second highest in North America.
In a report, Hirji recommends building barriers at the bridge as the most cost-effective way to address the recent cycle of deaths and demonstrate Niagara's resolve to address mental illness.
The estimated cost of installing barriers comes in at 3.5 million dollars.
