Now that we're finally getting some summer heat and the kids are about the finish school people may be eager to hit the water but more than a dozen beaches in Niagara have already been listed as unsafe for swimming. due to poor water conditions.
As of this morning, 14 beaches were listed unsafe by Niagara Public Health.
Inspector with Niagara Region Public Health Anthony Habjan explains the most popular and high risk beaches are tested on a regular basis.
"Sherkston, Nickel, Long, Lakeside...so these are the beaches that we test 6 days a week. And then the rest can range anywhere from 1 - 4 times per week."
Habjan says heavy rainfall or a spike in the bird population can impact the water quality.
Wet summers like 2017 have garnered quite a few closures, while last year didn't see quite the same results.
"Our closing in 2017 was probably around 36-37%," Habjan says. "But when we look like things like last year in 2018, we had a really good season; our posting percentage was hovering around 13-14%"
