The mandatory mask debate will be front and centre at tonight's Niagara Regional Council meeting.
Council debated the issue for over four hours two weeks ago and decided to approve a public awareness campaign regarding masks, but wait until tonight to vote on the actual by-law.
Pelham Regional Councillor Diana Huson tells CKTB the by-law they are debating is different from mask rules in place in St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
"Because the Niagara Region has purview over public health we can actually issue a by-law that pertains to the individual. So we can put the onus on the individual to be responsible for the face coverings whereas the individual municipalities can ask businesses to ask people within their stores to wear face coverings."
Huson is hoping the recent increase in local cases, and that video - showing a very crowded Clifton Hill - will give councillors an extra push to pass the by-law.
