Niagara's emergency responders are rolling up their sleeves to answer a call from Canadian Blood Services as part of the Sirens for Life challenge.
Niagara EMS Acting Superintendent of Public Relations and Affairs Bryce Brunarski says groups across Niagara are taking part in a friendly competition to see who can donate the most blood.
"Here in the Niagara Region our competition is between the Paramedics, Regional Police and OPP, as well as Firefighters, Correctional Services, and a newcomer this year - the Canadian Border Services Agency."
While not everyone relishes getting a needle, Brunarski says EMS has seen a great turnout so far.
"You know what, oddly enough there are some paramedics that themselves don't like getting needles. But they know that it's important for us to participate in Sirens for Life because as paramedics we get to see first hand examples of people who need blood every day in our profession."
There are only a few days left in the campaign, but Brunarski seems confident in EMS's odds.
"As of Monday, the start of the week, I am happy to announce that Niagara EMS is in first place. But it's just a small lead over Canada Border Services Agency who are up there in a very close second."
The competition wraps up on Monday, September 3rd.
Friends and family are invited to donate on behalf of their agency of choice.
