Another teachers' union is walking the picket line today.
Members of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association are staging a one day strike as part of negotiations with the provincial government.
Officials say they have met almost 40 times with the government and school board trustees, but the government's negotiation team has told them they have no mandate to negotiate an agreement that does not include significant cuts.
NDP MPP Jennie Stevens stopped by to show support for picketers at Denis Morris Catholic High School in St. Catharines. "If the Ford government would focus on what he knows has to happen and get back, and let's focus on education and focus in on the students and the teachers - He knows what he has to do to make this better."
Meanwhile Ciaran Murray, teacher at Denis Morris and picket captain, says spirits are still high. "We're getting lots of support from passing motorists honking and cheering us on. It's a very lively group and we're seeing a lot of support in the community."
Teacher and member of the OECTA local executive Rob Battista says people are becoming more informed. "Class size is one of the biggest things. It's going to affect the kind of courses we can offer students every year."
Murray adds teachers are not just focused on salary issues. "We're not here just for the compensation. It's class sizes, e-learning, it's protecting kindergarten."
