Niagara's only Conservative MPP has weighed in on today's decision by Premier Doug Ford to remove Niagara's ability to elect a regional chair at large.
Niagara West MPP Sam Oosteroff telling CKTB the move was made to save money.
When asked how it will actually do that, Oosteroff was unclear.
However, he says there is going to be a structural review of regional government's across the province.
"We're going to be making sure that these changes are done in a way that respects taxpayers, that respects the need for showing accountability and costing government and that seeks to reduce the size and cost of government"
When asked about the timing of today's announcement Oosteroff said his government was very clear on the campaign trail that they intended to look at ways to reduce the size and cost of government in Ontario.
Oosteroff pointed out that if the new term of Niagara Regional Council, elected in October, decides that they want to elect a chair directly in future elections they can pass a motion to do that.
