Niagara on the Lake's hydro board is calling on the Energy Minister to cancel all new Feed in Tariff renewable energy projects.
The board says the program gives renewable energy providers fixed rate contracts for 20 years or more at above market prices.
In a release town hydro officials says an analysis of the last round of contracts shows consumers paid an extra $27 million a year over and above the already high cost of electricity in Ontario
They add the generation being built under these contracts, predominately solar, will begin producing electricity this year and next, and will continue to generate high-priced electricity over the 20 year life of these contracts.
Chair of NOTL Hydro Jim Ryan says they aren't against renewable power they are just against the method of how the province is procuring it.
