The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority says water levels for Lake Erie are expected to increase rapidly due to a potential storm surge through the early hours of Tuesday.
Water levels on Lake Erie are still setting records and have increased slightly over the last week due to contributing rainfall.
As of June 23rd, Lake Erie’s water level was 175.18m. This is 83cm above average and 12cm above the record-high set during this week back in June of 1986.
Tonight however, water levels are forecast to rapidly increase over current water level due to a potential storm surge through the early hours Tuesday.
Stakeholders with interests along Lake Erie should pay close attention as the resulting storm surge could result in shoreline erosion due to damaging waves and localized flooding.
As for Lake Ontario, the water level is about 85 cms above average for this time of year.
NPCA says people along Lake Ontario shoreline should pay close attention to weather systems that bring sustained winds from the east and northeast as the resulting storm surge could result in erosion due to damaging waves and localized flooding.
The NPCA is continuing to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as required.
