Niagara Regional Police are cracking down on faded and blistering licence plates.
Officers have seen a ''drastic increase'' in the number of degraded plates, making them difficult or impossible to read.
This is largely due to a manufacturing defect that caused plates to rust and degrade prematurely.
Starting this month, motorists with unreadable plates will be pulled over and given a handout explaining how to replace them.
Written warnings will begin in July.
In August, any drivers who have received a warning and have not replaced their plates will be ticketed and fined 110 dollars.
If your licence plates are degraded you can visit a ServiceOntario centre to get them replaced.
Plates less than five years old are under warranty and will be changed free of charge; plates older than five years can be replaced for 57 dollars.
