Niagara Regional Police are warning businesses about an email scam.
NRP's Centralized Fraud Unit has identified the following recurring scam.
Scammers posing as the company's CEO or Manager have been emailing businesses, from email addresses very similar to the actual CEO's address.
Usually the difference in the email addresses is very subtle and can easily be missed.
These emails are usually directed to finance or accounts payable, and will contain information regarding a new client or invoice.
The "CEO" instructs the staff member to transfer funds to an account provided by the scammer.
These scams have caused significant losses for businesses.
Police urge businesses to be cautious of these scams and take steps to verify the legitimacy of transactions.
