School is right around the corner and that means Niagara police will be out in full force on Tuesday for their 18th annual back to school traffic safety and awareness day.
Dozens of officers will patrol school zones around the region, focusing on motorists who are speeding or driving aggressively and not paying attention to students and crossing guards.
The NRP also remind drivers and cyclists that all traffic must stop in both directions for a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.
They must remain stopped until the red flashing lights are turned off and the bus begins to move.
Meanwhile, the NRP and the committee responsible for school crossing guards in Niagara have launched an awareness campaign ahead of the start of the school year.
The goal is to remind all motorists and cyclists of Bill 31, which was passed in January of 2016, and prevents motorists from making a turn or proceed through a crosswalk until the entire crosswalk is free of pedestrians and crossing guards.
Drivers who violate the law could be fined anywhere from $150 to $500 and face three demerit points.
Fines are double in Community Safety Zones.
