Environmentalists say the latest sewage discharge into the Niagara River from a Niagara Falls, New York wastewater treatment plant is just the tip of the iceberg.
Clean water advocates say it highlights the need for upgrades to existing plants in Western New York.
Since May, around a half billion gallons of combined sewage and stormwater has been released from four Western New York wastewater plants into the Niagara River and other local waterways because of heavy rains.
The Niagara Falls, New York Water Board was cited last week by the state's Department of Enviromental Conservation for violating water quality standards after three million gallons of sewage was released into the river on August 15th after a heavy rainfall.
The Water Board remains under investigation for a July 29th dry water discharge that turned the water in the lower river black.
Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates is calling for the province to conduct its own investigation into the discharges.
