A Niagara Regional Police Officer has been charged with assault.
In early March, police started investigating an incident that occurred in St. Catharines.
As a result of the investigation, Sergeant Jake Grant was arrested today.
Grant will be charged with assault.
The incident occurred while the officer was on duty and involved a member of the public.
Grant has been released on an Officer in Charge Undertaking.
He has a future court date on May 26, 2017, at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St.Catharines.
Grant has been a police officer with the NRPS for 15 years, and is presently assigned to the Quality Assurance Unit.
At the time of the incident he was assigned to uniform patrol.
In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Sergeant Grant has been suspended with pay pending further investigation.
As the matter is now before the courts, no further comment or details will be provided.
