A prominent voice from the Me Too Movement is facing condemnation as authorities look into sexual assault allegations against her.
A report from the New York Times reveals 42 year old actress Asia Argento reached a settlement with actor Jimmy Bennet for $380,000 in October after Argento came forward with claims that movie mogul Harvey Weinstein raped her.
Argento and Bennett co-starred in a 2004 film as mother and son. Reportedly the two remained close after filming and in a legal notice of intent to sue, Bennett says he and Argento engaged in sexual activity in California in 2013 when Bennet was only 17.
The Times report indicated Bennet was traumatized by the encounter and believes it hurt his career.
No police report was filed at the time of the alleged incident.
Argento became one of the faces of the Me Too Movement after she gave an impassioned speech at the Cannes Film Festival and told the New Yorker she was raped by Weinstein during the festival in 1997 when she was 21. Weinstein is facing charges involving three women, but not including Argento.
Since the news of the settlement broke, other figures of the Me Too Movement have been speaking out on Twitter.
Tarana Burke writes, "My hope is that as more folks come forward, particularly men, that we prepare ourselves for some hard conversations about power and humanity and privilege and harm. This issue is less about crime & punishment and more about harm and harm reduction."
While Rose McGowan says, "I got to know Asia Argento ten months ago. Our commonality is the shared pain of being assaulted by Harvey Weinstein. My heart is broken. I will continue my work on behalf of victims everywhere."
