Fire officials say one person was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and heat injuries after re-entering a burning building on East Main Street in Welland.
Crews were called to the building around 3 p.m. Saturday and found a fire the basement of the strucutre just west of Hellems Avenue.
Deputy Chief Adam Eckhart says the fire was quickly knocked down in the basement but it spread to other floors.
At least 35 firefighters battled the blaze.
An occupant of the buildling was outside when firefighters arrived but went back in to possibly retrieve a pet.
No word on cause of the fire or the extent of damage.
