The Ontario Human Rights Commission is wading in on a legal challenge against the Ford government's interim sexual education curriculum.
While on the campaign trail Doug Ford promised to repeal and replace the sex-ed curriculum. A consultation is currently underway.
In a release the OHRC says the interim curriculum discriminates based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression and officials are intervening to protect the rights of girls and LGBTQ+ students.
"The children most affected by the changes to the education curriculum are the same children who are at the highest risk of exclusion, harassment and violence. This is not the safe, welcoming education experience envisioned in the Human Rights Code. We stand with students across Ontario who are using their voice to make sure all students’ human rights are respected," OHRC Chief Commissioner Renu Mandhane says.
In August, six families filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal, saying the curriculum does not represent gender diversity or LBGTQ issues.
Legal challenges have also been launched by The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Ontario Elementary School Teachers' union.
