Ontario traffic laws do not make it explicitly illegal to cross a solid double yellow line to pass another vehicle.
That was a surprise to northern Ontario N-D-P M-P-P Guy Bourgouin and many other Ontarians he has heard from since he has set out to get that changed.
Bougouin has introduced a private member's bill to make it illegal, along with a 400-dollar fine and at least three demerit points.
It is called Chad's Law, in honour of a constituent who was severely injured when a truck crossed a solid double yellow line to overtake another vehicle, and Chad Belanger's car was hit.
He was left with a broken neck, ribs, collarbone and sternum, a bruised heart and lungs, a concussion and P-T-S-D.
A spokesperson for Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says under Ontario's existing laws police can enforce offences if a driver is operating their vehicle unsafely -- including improper passing.
But Bourgouin says making it illegal to pass on a solid double yellow line will make drivers think twice about the behaviour, rather than enforcing penalties after an accident has happened.
