Ontario's chief coroner is launching a review of police suicides that took place in the province last year.
Dirk Huyer says the families of all nine officers who took their own lives, along with their police forces, are supportive of the review.
He says he will be convening an expert panel within the next few weeks to conduct the review, with the goal of releasing a report with recommendations by early summer.
Huyer says officers, police forces and coroners reached out to his office to discuss the issue of police suicides.
He says he found that there was a spike in police suicides in Ontario last year compared to the previous five years.
The issue of police suicides was pushed into the spotlight last summer when three Ontario Provincial Police officers killed themselves over a short period of time, prompting the force to launch an internal review.
