Ottawa paramedics are asking the province to greenlight a new program that would see some patients taken to hospital in a taxi.
The proposed program for patients with non-urgent concerns has been pitched as a way to ease crushing demand on a service that struggles with offload delays at hospitals and periods when no ambulances are available.
Chief Pierre Poirier says their proposal doesn't solve the underlying problems, but helps mitigate them to a degree, while getting ambulances to the next patient who needs them.
A spokesperson for Health Minister Sylvia Jones says the proposal is under review and has not been approved at this time.
