The city of Toronto has given the boot to a city councillor for allegedly overspending on his re-election campaign in last year's municipal vote.
Spokesman Brad Ross says the city clerk notified Jim Karygiannis that he is no longer a city councillor.
Karygiannis, a five-year member of Toronto City Council and a former Liberal M-P, is accused of spending nearly 26-thousand-dollars too much on ``parties and other expressions of appreciation'' during the campaign.
As part of his total 60-thousand-dollar campaign budget, he was allowed to spend no more than 61-hundred-and-20 dollars on parties, but spent over 32-thousand.
Karygiannis blames ``a clerical error in completing the paperwork,'' and says he is working with his lawyer and auditor to correct it and get reinstated.
