The owner of a home where four people, including two children died in Port Colborne has been fined over $100,000.
Port Colborne Fire saying the owner of 53 Nickel Street has been convicted on two count of failing to comply with the Ontario Fire Code.
The owner has been fined $100,000 plus a victim surcharge of 25%.
It was back in December of 2016 a tragic fire swept through the two-storey home in the early morning hours.
37 year old Tammy Burd, her children, 15-year-old old Samantha Zuvic and two-year-old Joshua Zuvic, and her grandmother all died of smoke inhalation.
83 year old Eva Burd was pulled from the home but died.
Burd's husband and an uncle, who also lived in the home, managed to escape the flames.
The cause of the fire was found to be "accidental - misused ignition source/equipment improperly discharged".
Fire Chief Tom Cartwright says during the investigation they found the owner of the home did not maintain and test the smoke alarms annually.
He says the tragic event will have an everlasting effect on the families, friends and emergency response personnel involved as well as the entire community.
He reminds owners of buildings in Port Colborne of their responsibilities under the Fire Code to install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
