The owner of Port Colborne Quarries is speaking out saying people are being emotional not logical.
Tom Rankin, the owner of Rankin Construction which owns the quarries on Highway 140 says local residents should not be worried about a proposed plan for one of the quarry's.
A public meeting was held this week with some residents saying they are worried about what will be used to fill the quarry.
Local resident and town councillor Harry Wells says his concern is that the ground water and soil will become contaminated by the fill and he would rather see the city turn the quarry into a recreational lake.
Wells lives near the quarry and has declared a conflict of interest since the future of the Quarry may impact his home's value.
Rankin defends the plan saying he wants to put clean fill in the quarry, and the soil that will be dumped in the quarry will be tested for any contamination.
Rankin says the idea of filling the quarry with water is not a great idea since the water will be stagnant and breed mosquitoes.
He says the plan has gone to council four times and it's been deferred each time.
Rankin says recent concerns have been stirred up by residents who live near the quarry who also sit on council.
The proposal will come back before council next month.
