The family of former prime minister John Turner is working with the government to determine how to honour his public life while public events are restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Turner died last Friday at the age of 91, and typically, a state funeral would be held in recognition of his contribution to Canada.
But the pandemic has forced severe restrictions on public gatherings, limiting the opportunities for Canadians to pay their respects.
A spokeswoman for Canadian Heritage says all decisions regarding funeral arrangements, including the date and how many people will attend, will be made in accordance with the family's wishes and following advice from public health authorities.
She says Canadians can send their condolences to the family by signing an online book of condolences or by sending their thoughts privately.
