A perfect weekend to open a new splash park in St.Catharines.
The water was officially turned on at West Park, which is located at 78 Louth Street following a over $1 million dollar facelift.
Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey and St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik marked the opening of the new splash pad, accessible washrooms and a sun shelter.
The Government of Canada contributed up to $500,000 towards the West Park improvements through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
“The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is ensuring residents in St. Catharines have access to improved community spaces,” said MP Badawey. “The new play structure, the new splash pad and all the other West Park enhancements we are celebrating today add to the healthy, active lifestyle we enjoy here. I know our residents will revel in these new features for years to come.”
“Council made a commitment to invest in neighbourhood parks and recreation spaces,” said Mayor Sendzik. “The improvements at West Park are creating new ways for residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. The new playground, fitness equipment and washrooms will be a lasting legacy of Canada’s 150th anniversary for many years to come.”
The City also received $11,697 in funding from the Ontario Tire Stewardship’s 2017 Community Renewal Fund grant program for its enhancements at West Park thanks to the project’s creative use of recycled tire materials.
The equivalent of approximately 1,100 recycled tires were used in the revitalized space.
The West Park splash pad will remain open until the end of September, weather permitting, when all City splash pads close for the season.
