The plan to demolish the old courthouse in Niagara Falls is getting some push back.
Last week, City Council voted to set aside $260,000 to tear down the building on Queen Street.
Former resident, Alex Colangelo has started a petition to at least look into saving the building. "people are attracted to these kind of buildings. You can't build them like this anymore. The brick and beam and the old construction you can't replace it once it's gone. You don't want to make a decision that you are going to regret."
He wants council to bring in some experts and see if the building can be restored.
Colangelo adds that the city helped save the Stamford Township building and did a great job, "so the city has done this kind of thing before, I just think they are shy about spending millions of dollars again on another building.
I think if there is any building you are going to try to save that you are going to spend money on then this is the building to do it."
The building was originally constructed 1866 and stood as the town hall until the 50's. That is when the original brick exterior was covered up and it became the courthouse. It has been vacant for the past two decades.
Colangelo's petition HERE has over 1,100 signatures.
