Port Colborne officials want to make sure the city never experiences another devastating fire like the one last December that claimed the lives of four people at a home on Nickel Street.

The city and its fire department are working on a campaign that will see smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors handed out for free to people who can't afford them.

Fire chief Tom Cartwright says they have received $1700 in donations to help kick start the plan.

Regional Chair Alan Caslin  contributed a thousand dollars from money raised during his charity golf tournament.

The December fire claimed the lives of four members of the Burd family, including two children aged 15 and two.
