The Prime Minister will skip an official trip to the Caribbean today and instead will convene the government's Incident Response Group to deal with protests that have shutdown much of the country's rail system.
The IRG was created in 2018 to handle any incidents that have national implications.
The move comes as Indigenous groups continue to block rail lines in sympathy with Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs opposed to a natural gas pipeline project crossing their territory in B.C.
Yesterday those protests came to Niagara, with demonstrators blocking the Canadian entrance to the Rainbow Bridge for about two hours.
A rail blockade in Belleville forced VIA Rail to suspend all service between the busy Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal corridor.
CP Rail has been virtually shut down across Eastern Ontario with at least two national organizations warning there could be shortages of consumer goods in Canada if the current rail blockades continue.
